The Firearms & Hunter Safety Class is comprised of numerous subjects such as, Safe Firearm handling, safe handling and hunting with a bow & arrow, crossbow, handgun, rifle, shotgun, muzzle loading firearms, trapping, ammunition, ethics of hunting, plus many more items of interest related to safe hunting and use of firearms. Our Class size is limited. Please review the rules below before registering. Our classes cover a lot of material with a minimum of 12 hours of instruction. In order for us to complete the classes in this time, we need the students to follow a few rules.
When you register with us you are agreeing to the following:
1. There is a six dollar ($6.00) fee per student. This holding fee guarantees you a seat in the class and helps defer for the costs of supplies.
2. Each class is given on three (3) separate days. You must attend and participate in all three days or you will not be given certification.
3. The first and second evening classes begins promptly at 6 PM at the Frederick Chapter of Izaak Walton League, and ends promptly at 10 PM (directions are below). Please be on time.
4. The third class begins promptly at 7:30 AM at Frederick Chapter of Izaak Walton League, and will end no later than 4 PM that Saturday of class (directions are below). Please be on time.
5. We are concerned for your safety. The Saturday class involves a LIVE FIRE Exercise. You will be provided with eye & hearing protection. The Maryland Department of Natural Resources forbids you from bringing any firearms or ammunition to any of the classes, the Instructors will provide all of the Firearms, Ammunition, and targets.
6. Due to the size of the classes, Children under the age of 16 must have a parent or guardian at the class. There are no exceptions to this rule.
7. The Instructors do not like to remove anyone from the class, but they have and have the Right to permanently dismiss any student from the class for disciplinary reasons.
8. The Instructors try to ensure everyone is given a fair chance to make a decent passing grade, but its up to the student to do the class work. The Student must attend all three classes, pass a Written and Field Test with a score of 80% or greater, and demonstrate that they have the knowledge and ability to be a safe ethical hunter.
9. Saturday afternoon, after successfully completing all of the Minimum Requirements for the Maryland Firearms & Hunter Safety Course and having been Recommended by the Instructors, you will be given your signed Certificate for Completing the Course. Children UNDER the age of Sixteen (16) will also be given a certificate for a FREE Basic License. These Certificates can only be redeemed at the DNR Service Centers listed on the back of the form or mailed to the appropriate address as stated on the back of the form.
